The Lady Mav and Maverick cross country teams ran at the Midway Kiwanis Invitational at Lake Waco last Thursday. The team had almost every runner lower their own season best times at the distances they were competing in. Among those were Lily Bird, Brady Bramlett, Chase Clark, Addy Cunningham, Samuel Cruz, Carolyn Hernandez, Miguel Hernandez, Andrew Hicks, Mikey Seabourn, Kadyn Turney, and Keegan Williamson.
Lily Bird also broke her own personal record in the two mile running a 13:26.70. Her previous best was at last years District 8-AAA competition. That mark leaves her just 13 seconds off the pace to bump into the top 5 all time record board at EHS. Sammy Herrera continued his assault on the top 5 record board jumping from his previous mark of 17:17.20 (was #5 on the record board) to a new position at #3 with a personal best time of 16:32.20. Trailing the #2 time set by Buster Bartee in 2001 with a time of 16:19, and current teammate and school record holder Andrew Hicks who ran a 16:03.00 last year at the District Championship. Hicks missed tying his record time by :13 seconds, running a 16:16.50.
Medaling for their respective teams this week were Lily Bird (8th), Keegan Williamson (19), Herrera (4th), and Hicks (2nd). In the boys Varsity division, the duo of Hicks and Herrera finished 6th and 8th respectively against all runners from class A to 6A.
Next week the teams will be running at Mae Simmons Park for the Lubbock ISD invitational, the host site of the Region 1 Championships.
